South Orange TOD Wins Smart Growth Award

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ-New Jersey Future has recognized Sterling Properties' Avenue at South Orange project with its 2009 Smart Growth Award.

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ-The Avenue at South Orange–a condominium project located across from the city’s NJ Transit train station–has been honored by New Jersey Future with a 2009 Smart Growth Award. A development of Sterling Properties, the property is a central part of the town’s New Market Project, an initiative aimed at revitalizing South Orange’s central business district and the property that surrounds the train station.

Selected by an independent jury, which includes representatives of New Jersey Future’s board of trustees as well as other professionals in development and planning, the 2009 Smart Growth Awards recognize those projects, groups and institutions that produce economically prosperous, environmentally sustainable and socially equitable places. This year’s award recipients will be honored during a ceremony scheduled for Wednesday at the Newark Club in Newark.

In addition to the Avenue, South Orange’s New Market project also includes the new 13,500-square-foot Eden Gourmet Market on South Orange Avenue and a parking deck that will be used to accommodate residents and shoppers, as well as streetscape improvements and more efficient land use for retail and residential amenities.
