Hello World! incisivemedia, parent of GlobeSt.com, THE most respected and well-known name in U.S. commercial real estate media (that's my opinion!), has graciously asked me to write this blog. Given the current economic environment, GlobeSt.com saw a need to communicate the perspective of both the corporate real estate occupant and its advisors. While I am already the author of two other blogs, one on corporate real estate and another on careers and business philosophy, two books on corporate real estate, and over 90 white papers on this subject and others, because of the respect I have for the folks at GlobeSt.com and their dedication to the commercial real estate industry, I happily agreed to do this.
I am grateful to have been invited to become GlobeSt.com's partner in this endeavor. I am extremely excited to be working with them, and am eager to provide you with my thoughts and ideas. I don't expect you to agree with all of what I write. In fact, from time to time, you may completely disagree with me. Some of you may think I'm a total idiot..we'll see. In that case, I do hope you'll have the stones to let me know your thoughts by writing replies to my posts. If you feel the urge, I invite you to let me have it...out loud...but, only if I really deserve it. Afterall, successful real estate professionals like you and me must have strong backbones and thick skin. In our business, we have to be built to last. Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to do much good for our clients, who rely on us to help them accomplish their objectives and to protect their interests. So, go ahead! When you feel inspired, give me your best shot. I can take it! But, don't be surprised if I give it back to you, too.
Although some may interpret this blog as being anti-landlord, that's not how it's intended at all. Our corporate clients, those you call tenants and buyers, and their brokers and advisors, certainly need commercial landlords. But, they need good ones....those who understand the real interdependent relationship that exists between them and their tenants, those who understand that their business is really about providing great service to their customers, and those who respect quality real estate advisors. In fact, the majority of commercial landlords are good, honest business people who are working to achieve their goals, some of whom can be incredibly creative and sophisticated when working with tenants. It's the lousy ones that you may see me rail against...the ones who don't care, who don't keep their word and re-trade on deals, those who are disrespectful to tenants and their advisors, and those who generally beat the hell out of their tenants! You may read one or two tiny comments from me about them on a rare occasion.
By reading this blog regularly, you will learn about some creative ideas (my firms' clients think so!), proven approaches, and some new ones, too, designed to accomplish the business needs of corporate occupants. That's right! Real estate, from the corporate perspective, is not about real estate for real estate's sake. It is purely about achieving the financial and operational objectives of the companies that occupy the millions and millions of square feet of office, distribution, technology, healthcare, manufacturing, and other types of facilities around the globe.
