Kodachrome

This morning, I opened the Wall Street Journal to the sad story that Kodak is “retiring” Kodachrome film, the storied strip of cellulous that most of us grew up with. Do you remember Mom, Dad, sister and brother looking at slides ejecting from big round trays of projectors that overheated the room, and Paul Simon’s hit song, Kodachrome ? I mention this because the decommissioning is, for me, a stark sign of the times. As an amateur photographer, I love film and still bristle at the digital medium. Alas, photography–like real estate–is changing along with everything else. Everything has changed, and everyone is trying to sort out what it all means, and how the game is going to be played going forward. The fact of the matter is that, we’ll sort it out and–in my view–exciting and opportunistic times are beginning to emerge for those with the foresight to recognize it. Aside from the memories, Kodachrome is really no great loss–I don’t have a projector anyway.
