Final numbers are still being determined for next year's expansion plans, which may include two store openings originally scheduled for this year, but delayed. Two more stores will open in the fourth quarter, in Tucson, AZ, and canyon country in California.
"I expect it to be a double-digit number," said Steven G. Miller, chairman, president and CEO. Openings will be divided between California and other markets.
For the quarter, sales increased were $231.6 million, up from net sales of $223.2 million for the third quarter of fiscal 2008. Same-store sales increased 1.6%. Net income was $8 million, vs. earnings of $4.5 million, for the year-ago quarter.
Big 5 operates 382 stores in 11 states under the "Big 5 Sporting Goods" name.
