Ever since Ronald Reagan´s "Morning in America" optimism trumped Jimmy Carter´s attempt at straight talk about malaise, America´s leaders have been careful to latch onto the notion of American exceptionalism, the idea that our democracy and our way of life will prevail because we are somehow better than everyone and everywhere else. President Obama made sure to include a helping of America is better rhetoric in his Afghan War speech last week.
