GOODLETTSVILLE, TN-Locally based Dollar General Corp. says it plans to open 600 new stores over the coming year in response to greater demand for discount stores during the recession. The 8,800-store chain also says it will create 5,000 new jobs this year, adding to the 4,000 positions it created last year and the 78,000 employees it now has.

“Despite today’s tough economic climate, Dollar General continues to hire great talent,” Bob Ravener, Dollar General’s senior vice president and chief people officer, stated in a release. “We have exciting plans for 2010, which include expanding our work force in many suburban, rural and urban communities.”
