Opus Northwest LLC is developing the project, in conjunction with Opus Architects and Engineers, and Boston-based architectural firm Shepley Bulfinch.

The design hopes "to create a destination on campus that celebrates the values and culture of the University, while engaging the entire University community, and establish St. Thomas as the college of choice among their competition," according to John Solberg, president and CEO of Opus Northwest.

The new student center will replace current facilities, coming out of the ground at Summit and Cretin Avenues. The L-shaped building will include dining facilities, a four-lane bowling center, dance floor, pool tables and a first floor recreation area. There will also be offices for The Division of Student Affairs, Campus Ministry, Auxiliary Services and other student organizations and clubs. Lastly, the building will also have a store to purchase University of St. Thomas merchandise and a convenience store.

"The student center will serve as a wonderful gathering place that will tie together our north and south campuses," said Father Dennis Dease, president of the University of St. Thomas. "Additionally, it will serve as the living room – the heart of the campus, establishing a new physical identity for the University as the 'place to be,' enhancing and encouraging students to get to know each other better, learn from each other and build bridges across cultures."

The student center design is likely to gain LEED Silver certification. Opus has plans to include energy-efficient mechanical systems, water conservation techniques, highly insulated exterior walls and lighting controls.

As GlobeSt.com reported, Opus is also currently building a $52 million, 180,000-square-foot athletic facility, the Anderson Athletic and Recreation Center. It is slated to open in August 2010. The athletic complex, which is being named after Lee and Penny Anderson who donated $60 million for the project, will hold a 2,000-seat basketball arena, an eight-lane, 25-meter swimming pool, a field house with a 200-meter indoor track, as well as fitness and weight training spaces.
