Silverstein Takes His Case to 60 Minutes

NEW YORK CITY-In a news segment on delays in rebuilding at Ground Zero, the Silverstein Properties CEO calls the lack of progress 'a national disgrace.'

NEW YORK CITY-Describing himself as “the most frustrated person in the world,” World Trade Center developer Larry Silverstein told an interviewer for CBS-TV’s 60 Minutes Sunday evening that the lack of progress in rebuilding Ground Zero was “a national disgrace.” The 60 Minutes segment asserted that by the 10th anniversary of 9/11, $7 billion will have been spent and none of the major components of the World Trade Center redevelopment—the office towers, the Santiago Calatrava-designed PATH terminal or the memorial—will have been completed.

Silverstein, the CEO of Silverstein Properties Inc., expressed concern and frustration that the entire project might not be finished until 2037, the date projected in a 2009 study conducted for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. “I’m 78,” he told 60 Minutes. “I’d like to see this completed within my lifetime.”

The segment noted that an arbitration panel recently ordered SPI and the Port Authority to come up with a new timetable for the mega-project. Silverstein acknowledged that his company and the Port, ostensibly partners on the project, lately talk to one another mostly through their attorneys.
