Marvin Markus, a managing director at Goldman Sachs, resigned as chair of the RGB late last year. "For the past eight years, Marvin Markus served that role with sincerity, and I know Jonathan Kimmel will bring the same degree of commitment," says Bloomberg in a statement. "His experience on the board and his diverse background as an attorney, public servant and educator will serve him well as he takes on this new role."
Kimmel previously served on the board as one of five members representing the general public. The RGB also contains two members to represent tenant interests and two to represent the interests of owners.
Founded in 1969, the RGB holds an annual series of public meetings and hearings to consider research from staff, and testimony from owners, tenants, advocacy groups and industry experts in setting guidelines for rent increases. It publishes reports based on this research for use by the public, other governmental agencies and private organizations, and provides information to the public on housing questions.
Kimmel's appointment to the chairmanship leaves a vacancy on the nine-member board, which is scheduled to hold its next public meeting on March 23. When Markus's resignation as chairman was announced earlier this year, the New York Observer reported it thusly: "Now vacant in the Bloomberg administration: a job that requires being yelled at for hours on end, hosting countless public meetings, making decisions that will leave everyone mad at you. The pay: $125 a day."
