Solar Parking Structure Gives Back

Martifer Solar's solar carport system is generating 600,000 kilo-watt hours per year.

LANCASTER, CA-Martifer Solar has added a SmartPark solar carport system to the Antelope Valley Transit Authority here. The structure lends shade to 110 vehicles, while generating 600,000 kilowatt hours per year for the AVTA. At an estimated 16 cents per kilowatt hour, the savings will add up.

The federal government’s mandate in California for companies to incorporate sustainable initiatives was the spur that drove transit authority’s request for proposals. The 35,000-square-foot system was funded by the Transit Investments for Greenhouse Gas and Energy Reduction (TIGGER) grant program under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). By producing its own energy, the company can receive less with an impact of saving 400 tons of carbon dioxide projected over 35 years.

The $2.178-million project was installed over three months and assisted with much sought-after jobs, added 30 green-collars during its construction. Martifer is a multinational provider of solar energy solutions.
