Navy Yard Will Get Supermarket

NEW YORK CITY-PA Developers is selected to redevelop a six-acre site within the Brooklyn Navy Yard and will partner with ShopRite on a 55,000-square-foot grocery.

NEW YORK CITY-PA Developers and ShopRite will build the first full-sized supermarket near the Brooklyn Navy Yard as part of a $60-million redevelopment project there. According to a release from the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corp., which selected the developer and grocery chain based on their response to an RFP issued last summer, PA will develop a 55,000-square-foot supermarket and additional 30,000 square feet of neighborhood retail space as well as 125,000 square feet of industrial space on a six-acre site.

The project will redevelop a section of the navy yard known as Admirals’ Row, which contains 11 long-unused structures originally built as officer’s quarters by the Navy in the 19th century. Two of the properties will be incorporated into the development: Building B, the oldest and largest of the 10 row houses along Admirals’ Row, and the Timber Shed, believed to be the only such structure in the US.

According to the BNYDC, PA will enter into a long-term lease for the site, with the project scheduled to break ground by 2012. Coming before that will be the federal government’s transfer of the Admirals’ Row site to the city, which owns the 300-acre Brooklyn Navy Yard property.
