Skodowski is responsible for creating the firm's U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED certification program; he and his team have successfully certified 25 projects totaling over 9.5 million square feet across the nation. He previously held the title of senior vice president and director of LEED and sustainability services.

Skodowski, a LEED accredited professional, has over 28 years of commercial real estate facility management experience. Under his leadership, Transwestern is currently pursuing LEED-EB certification on more than 60 buildings.

"The new position will allow me to work more effectively across Transwestern's national platform, working directly with senior leadership to further the sustainability efforts both internally and externally," Skodowski tells GlobeSt.com. "It will allow me to interact directly with the regions, and the Transwestern quality assurance and innovation team to further the implementation of the LEED for Existing Building standards into all aspects of our management and engineering teams."

Skodowski will focus on expanding Transwestern's internal sustainable operations program, dubbed "STEPS", into all managed assets. STEPS is built on the LEED for Existing Building Operation and Maintenance program.

"Understanding that not every building can or will obtain certification, we built the program to allow for our management and engineering teams to implement and track their progress over time," he explains. "Some things will simply not be optional on a Transwestern managed assets. It's as much about doing the right thing as reducing costs, improving tenant comfort and client assets value."

Skodowski says many building owners believe it is costly to be sustainable or obtain LEED certification. "Our work over the past couple of years with nearly 50 EB certified buildings has allowed us to scale the program and drive costs down," he adds.

In 2009, the awarded Skodowski its Leadership Award for the private sector. He currently serves on the USGBC board of directors.
