The firm is a partnership of Woburn, MA-based Tocci Building Corp. and L.F. Driscoll Company, LLC in Bala Cynwyd, PA. Tocci/Driscoll will oversee structural, operational and aesthetic work on the downtown structure, which is home to regional offices of several US government agencies. Tocci/Driscoll also brought KlingStubbins on board the as architect of record for the Dattner Architects-designed project.
Named after Newark native and 40-year member of the US House of Representatives, the Peter W. Rodino Federal Building is a 16-story, 467,000-square-foot precast concrete structure that was constructed in 1968. Previous renovations provided an upgraded HVAC system and interior improvements to several floors.
But the new polish program--which is scheduled for a 2014 completion--will incorporate the gut rehab of nine floors and a major mechanical, electrical and plumbing system overhaul, according to GSA reports. In addition to the interior work, the exterior façade will undergo a full restoration followed by the installation of a glass curtainwall overclad.
Combined, the MEP and façade improvements are designed to achieve LEED Silver certification; this will represent the largest LEED-certified renovation undertaken to date by the GSA, with an estimated 30% reduction in energy consumption compared to 2009, the agency says. The project also marks the GSAs strongest foray into 3-D, 4-D and 5-D technologies as a means of significantly improving building quality and cost.
