SAN DIEGO-BioMed Realty Trust Inc. broke ground on the new 176,000-square-foot research facility for Isis Pharmaceuticals Inc. at the Carlsbad Oaks North Business Park site in Carlsbad, CA. The new facility will increase BioMed’s total leased space with Isis to approximately 204,700 square feet.

As GlobeSt.com previously reported, Isis signed a 20-year lease with San Diego-based BioMed Realty Trust, to consolidate the majority of its operations in the new facility. According to Dr. Stanley T. Crooke, chairman and CEO of the pharmaceuticals company, Isis worked closely with BioMed “to design a functional and efficient facility that will meet our needs for the near-term and for the future.”

Upon completion of construction, Isis will lease the new building for a 20-year term and consolidate the majority of its operations in the new facility. Commenting on the new facility, Dr. Crooke, points out that having a majority of its operations into a single facility will “foster our collaborative approach to drug discovery and development.”

According to the Mayor of Carlsbad, Claude Lewis, “cultivating the life science industry has had a long-term, positive impact on our community, especially in terms of economic development and local jobs.”

Designed by the architectural firm of DGA of San Diego, the facility is being constructed by DPR Construction Inc. of San Diego. BioMed did not answer GlobeSt.com queries regarding construction cost or timeline by deadline.
