JERSEY CITY-Little Explorers Academy has signed a lease to open an early childhood learning/daycare center at BeKids, the 66,000 square-foot children’s-only destination located within the Beacon mixed-use community here.

Scheduled to open in June 2011, Little Explorers will occupy 13,664 square feet throughout two floors of the ten-story building. The facility will help complete a continuum of activities for children at the one-of-a-kind kid’s location, according to Metrovest Equities, which is developing The Beacon, a historic art deco landmark that will ultimately comprise 1,200 luxury residences and 80,000 square feet of retail and commercial space.

The Little Explorers Academy will serve children ages six weeks to five years, with an emphasis on art, language, music, education and recreation. “The addition of the Little Explorers Academy underscores our commitment to providing quality education and entertainment to residents of the Beacon and families throughout the New Jersey/Metropolitan area,” says George Filopoulos, president of Metrovest Equities, the Beacon’s developer.

In addition to the Little Explorers at BeKids, Metrovest has also executed a Letter of Intent with an advanced curriculum charter school for Grades 6 through 12 in a 44,000-square-foot space in one of the existing Beacon towers. Discussions are simultaneously under way for a kindergarten-through-five school.

Also planned for BeKids are uses such as gymnastics and sports camps and a kids-oriented family restaurant, while discussions are underway with operators of soccer schools, skate parks, children’s museums, dance studios, music instruction, children’s parties, ice cream parlors, toy stores and children’s apparel.

More than 550 residents currently live in the community’s first phase of 315 condominium homes, which is almost fully sold and occupied. Preview sales recently opened for the second phase, Mercury Lofts, which features 25 half- and full-floor lofts, ranging from 3,000 to 6,000 square feet, in a 17-story building--seven of which are sold. Initial occupancy is scheduled for August 2010.
