PHOENIX-The Ak-Chin Casino, which is owned by the Ak-Chin Indian Community and managed by Harrah’s, is expanding.

Construction has begun on the five-story tower that will house 152 additional guest rooms. The expansion has a price tag of $20 million, according to Joel Delia II, a project manager with The PENTA Building Group Inc.

The company is the general contractor for the casino’s expansion, which is scheduled for completion in July 2011. PENTA has worked with Harrah’s on several projects in Las Vegas and has expertise working with a number of Indian tribes.

Located about 39 miles south of the Phoenix city center, the Ak-Chin Casino features 148 hotel rooms, along with a 40,000-square-foot casino that offers gaming machines, poker, blackjack, keno and bingo. The hotel also boasts four restaurants, meeting and conference space, an entertainment venue and outdoor swimming pool.

Designed by RSP Architects’ local office, the new tower will be skinned in terracotta panels and will feature punched windows decorative metal panels. It will share a lobby with the casino’s existing two-story facility and will feature new VIP suites with balconies on every floor, as well as a sculpture and cactus garden that highlights desert flora, Delia tells GlobeSt.

“This is an exciting project for Maricopa County and for the tribe,” Delia says.

The project marks the re-opening of PENTA’s Arizona office, which closed in 2006. In addition to Phoenix, the firm has offices in Las Vegas, Reno, NV, Los Angeles and Palm Desert, CA.
