SOMERSET, NJ-With an eye toward enhancing the famed 70-mile Delaware-Raritan Canal State Park in Central New Jersey, Canal Walk Associates, LLC--a wholly-controlled affiliate of Premier Development--is in the midst of the restoration of a 19th Century Delaware and Raritan Canal Bridge Tender’s House located approximately 0.5 miles from its Canal Walk active adult community on Schoolhouse Road here.
The renovation of the historic House--which lies on property owned by the State of New Jersey and is overseen by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and the Delaware and Raritan Canal Commission--includes considerable structural improvements and extensive exterior and interior upgrades, according to Michael Sommer, senior vice president of the Westfield, N.J.-based Premier Development, which is investing significant capital to fund the restoration project.
Once completed, the house--originally used as a home for those whose job it was to open the swing bridge when canal boats came through--is expected to be available for public viewing with the possibility of future office space, serving as yet another historical marker along the Delaware-Raritan Canal and towpath, which are part of the National Recreational Trail System.
Canal Walk is a neighborhood of nearly 1,400 homes for active adults situated in Somerset County’s Franklin Township and directly linked to the Delaware-Raritan Canal through community walking trails which have been laid out to connect with sections of the historic canal that have been preserved as public open space. Spread across its 300-acre site, Canal Walk features a mix of housing types, including single-family residences, townhomes and condominiums. The central gathering destination of Canal Walk is a private, 32,000-square-foot clubhouse, which includes a heated pool and whirlpool, a spa with steam room, sauna and a fully equipped fitness room. There is also a library, crafts room, billiards room and separate men’s and women’s card rooms. Tennis, bocce courts and a putting green are adjacent to the outdoor pool and spa.
