LONG ISLAND CITY, NY-Long Island City is beginning to shape up as a self-contained city. Thanks to its development activities, a number of residential, public and commercial spaces are opening up. There are about 5,000 apartment units that are under construction or have been completed lately.

The development activity was initiated with the rezoning of 37 blocks by the Department of City Planning in 2001. Just a week back, Toyoko Inn Co. revealed its plans to open a 640-room hotel on Jackson Avenue. For the full story, go to Wall Street Journal.
