SAN DIEGO-Turner Construction Co. has been selected to construct the $153 million New Central Library for the City of San Diego in San Diego. The library is scheduled for completion in March 2013 and is being designed and constructed to achieve a LEED Silver certification from the USGBC.

The 295,000-square-foot nine-story library features a 10,244-square-foot children’s library, a technology center, outdoor plaza and cafe, a 350-seat auditorium, a three-story domed reading room, a 400-seat multi-purpose room, teen center and two levels of underground parking. In addition, two floors of the library totaling 76,000 square feet will be used for a charter school serving up to 400 students.

“Turner is proud to manage the construction of this important public resource to enable the library system to meet the needs of the community it serves and for the benefit and enjoyment of the residents of the City of San Diego,” says Shawn Rosenberger, vice president and regional manager of Turner’s San Diego operations.

Turner has provided pre-construction services for the library, which will be located at 330 Park Blvd., since being awarded the project in 2004. In June, the City Council approved construction of the library by a vote of 6 to 2.

More than $150 million is already earmarked for this project from the State Library, Centre City Development, the City Schools and private donors. An additional $10 million has been donated to cover additional operating costs. San Diego should capitalize on this opportunity to build this long-needed new civic asset that will benefit all of San Diego for decades to come, according to the San Diego Public Library Foundation.
