HOUSTON-Darrell Betts – one of the Southwest’s most prominent commercial real estate investment brokers – has joined Avison Young’s brokerage operations in Houston.

In his new role of principal, Betts will lead the firm’s capital markets practice in Texas and the Southwest U.S. He began his commercial real estate career 24 years ago and over his career has been involved in more than $5 billion worth of real estate transactions. Most recently he was an executive director with the Cushman & Wakefield of Texas Inc.’s capital markets group.

“I wasn’t looking for [another job], but when I sat down with the Avison Young people, it became clear that this was a great opportunity,” Betts tells GlobeSt. “The number one reason is being able to reconnect with Chair and CEO Mark Rose. I know what he’s capable of, and he’s building a first-tier team.”

Avison Young, Canada’s largest independently-owned commercial real estate services company, opened its first U.S. office in Chicago in 2009. It opened the Houston office earlier this year and tapped Rand Stephens to head operations. In addition to those offices, the firm also has offices in Washington, DC; Atlanta; and Tysons Corner, VA.

“Darrell adds additional leadership to our national and international Capital Markets business as well as another seasoned senior leader in the Southwest,” says Earl Webb, Avison Young’s President, U.S. Operations. “

In addition to his tenure at Cushman & Wakefield, Betts was Chief Investment Officer at Thompson National Properties and President of the firm’s Middle East Fund, responsible for acquisitions and joint ventures as well as sourcing capital for the Middle East Fund.

From 1998 to 2008, Betts was Senior Vice-President, Institutional Investment Group at Grubb & Ellis Co. where he headed the leading investment team in the Southwest and the top producing team nationwide for 2007. For a decade, Betts was one of the top producers for Grubb & Ellis, assisting investors in disposing of their investment properties.
