NANTUCKET, MA-The much anticipated Cape Wind project is finally a go. The US Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and Cape Wind President Jim Gordon signed the off-shore wind farm's first lease. The 130 turbines will be erected on Horseshoe Shoal in Nantucket Sound.
The lease will last 25 years, which fits into the US Department of Energy's plan to install 54,000 megawatts of offshore wind power in the US by 2030. That wattage would require roughly 100 similarly sized projects.
"This crucial milestone opens a new chapter of clean electricity production and a new source of jobs for our nation," says Gordon, in a statement. Cape Wind obtained Federal and State approval, as well as a lease to operate on by the Federal government. It is the first project of its kind to receive this. Gordon predicts the project will create hundreds of jobs.
