PHILADELPHIA-Michael Giliberto, the co-creator of the Giliberto-Levy mortgage index and recently retired senior real estate portfolio manager and director of portfolio strategy at JP Morgan Asset Management, has been elected to the board of TRECAP Partners LLC as an outside director. Douglas A. Tibbetts, TRECAP’s CEO, said in a statement that Giliberto will serve on the board’s finance and communications committees.

A well-known industry research analyst and leading portfolio manager, Giliberto heads a real estate consulting business, S. Michael Giliberto & Co. Inc., and is an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business. From 1996 until earlier this year, he was a managing director responsible for real estate multi-strategy products at JP Morgan, overseeing portfolios totaling $30 billion in gross assets.

In 1993, he established the Giliberto-Levy Index, an often-cited industry benchmark for measuring the quarterly returns of institutional, commercial grade whole mortgage loans. Before joining JP Morgan, Giliberto was head of real estate research at Lehman Brothers and Salomon Brothers. Previously, he was a business management professor at Southern Methodist University.

Giliberto was awarded a PhD in finance from the University of Washington, an MA in business economics from the University of Hartford and an undergraduate degree from Harvard University. He holds the Counselor of Real Estate designation and is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

“Michael provides TRECAP with an invaluable store of industry expertise and experience to help guide our business strategies and overall portfolio management direction,” Tibbetts said. “There are few people in the commercial real estate business with Michael’s depth of understanding about how markets work and proven ability to analyze trends. He is a tremendous addition to the board.”

Giliberto added, “In a short period of time, TRECAP has made impressive strides, establishing a substantial advisory platform to serve its clients in a rapidly changing real estate marketplace. Joining the board represents a tremendous opportunity for me to work with a veteran team, committed to long-term performance and fiduciary responsibility.”

Woody Hunt, chairman of TRECAP’s board and chairman and CEO of Hunt Companies Inc. noted that “outside directors like Michael enhance our firm, providing essential perspective on how we grow the company, develop new products and reach out to new clients.”
