SECAUCUS, NJ – When the third of three new solar energy systems in Secaucus comes on line, it will add 2.8 megawatts of capacity to Hartz Mountain Industries’ solar portfolio for a total of 6.2 megawatts, 3% of all the solar capacity in the state, the developer says. Already up and running are systems at 125 Castle Rd., leased by DJS Acquisitions, and 200 Seaview Drive, owned and occupied by Hartz. The third, 50 Hartz Way, leased by Gucci of America, will come on line sometime in January, according to a Hartz Mountain spokeswoman. “Hartz made a commitment to incorporate environmentally sound practices into our daily operations which have not only been good for the environment but also for business,” says Emanuel Stern, president and COO of Hartz Mountain Industries, in a release “Additionally, energy emissions are down 9% and water usage is down 48% in some of our buildings. The results speak for themselves.” In April, Hartz Mountain and the EPA Region II entered into a Memorandum of Understanding, with Hartz becoming a partner in the EPA’s Energy Star, WasteWise, and GreenScapes programs. In addition to the solar programs, the company has redesigned its landscaping at several buildings, resulting in the water savings and recycled 67.5 additional tons of waste at its Harmon Meadow and Mill Creek developments. Additionally, the company’s hospitality division will complete an $18-million green renovation of the Sheraton Lincoln Harbor hotel in early 2011. The renovation is on track to be Silver LEED certified.
