MIAMI-Experts will address the Panama Canal expansion and its impact on Miami’s economic and real estate landscapes at “The Panama Canal Expansion: A South Florida Economic & Real Estate Opportunity” on February 18. Sponsored by the Realtors Commercial Alliance of Miami in partnership with WorldCity, the event will explore the impact on local cargo traffic, job creation, and commercial and residential real estate activity.
“Miami, already considered a key gateway to the Americas, is among the best positioned to capitalize on the increased traffic that will result from the expanded canal system," says John Carver, executive vice president of Port, Airport & Global Infrastructure at Jones Lang LaSalle, who is a national expert on port traffic. “Port operations have become major economic engines for the surrounding regions they serve.”
Rodolfo Sabonge, vice-president, Office of Market Research and Analysis at the Panama Canal Authority, will headline the event and highlight the continuing progress of the canal’s expansion and its impact on the Port of Miami, its strategic business partner and closest U.S. port. Featured speakers also include Bill Johnson, director of the Miami Port Authority, Robert Cruz, chief economist for Miami-Dade County, Ken Roberts CEO of WorldCity, and David Banfield, director of Sales and Port Development at Florida East Coast Railway.
Tere Blanca, president and CEO of Blanca Commercial Real Estate, is bullish on the Panama Canal expansion’s impact on the region’s commercial real estate investment interests. She cites direct impacts on international trade, technology, and telecommunications industries.
“South Florida and Miami in particular has established a strong international trade business space that will continue to expand through the next decade,” Blanca tells GlobeSt.com “Miami has infrastructure. The Miami International Airport, the Panama Canal expansion, the port of Miami’s expansion, and planned dredging to accommodate the post-Panamax vessels will continue to support the expansion of international trade.”
