AUSTIN, TX-Winstead PC has expanded its real estate practice here, bringing on two well-known attorneys: Robert D. (Bob) Burton, and Carey Gunn Helm.

Burton joins Winstead as a shareholder, while Helm will be of counsel. They will both be members of the firm's Real Estate Development and Investments practice group, which is one of the largest in Texas, according to Kevin Sullivan, chairman & CEO of Winstead.

In addition, Burton and Helm bring with them their team of support staff, which includes: two paralegals, a legal secretary, a paraclerk and a case clerk, recently joined the firm. Burton, Helm and their support staff were previously with Armbrust and Brown PLLC.

Currently, Winstead has eight offices including six in Texas. Between its Austin and San Antonio offices, the firm has 54 attorneys – the majority of them in Austin, Sullivan notes. The Austin office does a lot of regulatory and government work because Austin is the state capital.

However, the office’s real estate practice is active and growing due to Austin’s robust economy, Sullivan tells GlobeSt.com. “We regard Austin as an important region, and from a real estate perspective, we think it’s cycling back and going to get better,” he says. “But regardless of the market, we are looking for attorneys who are good and productive in all cycles, and Bob and Cary are those sorts of people.”

Sullivan says Burton and Helm bring added depth and experience to Winstead's real estate capabilities. Burton, who received his J.D. from Tulane University Law School, specializes in mixed-use projects and will also co-chair Winstead's Mixed Use Development group with Ed Peterson, the firm's Business and Transaction Department Head. The duo will continue to expand Winstead's mixed-use practice in Texas and nationally.

Burton represents national, regional and local clients in the acquisition, development, formation, operation and administration of residential and mixed use condominiums, resort and master planned communities. He acted as lead counsel to the developer of the W Hotel and Residences and the 360 Condominiums, both in Austin.

In addition, Burton presently serves as lead community governance counsel to the developer of the Mueller Airport Redevelopment, Steiner Ranch, as well as a number of mixed-use developments throughout the state.

Helm is a native of Austin who focuses on condominiums, community associations, timeshares and resort development. She previously ran her own firm for several years in Vail, CO, and is licensed in both Texas and Colorado.

With a J.D. from the Catholic University’s Columbus School of Law, Helm helps clients with a wide variety of legal issues including matters related to the formation, transition, operation and governance of residential and mixed use condominiums and master planned developments.

Working with Burton, Helm will focus on expanding Winstead's client base in the Central Texas region and nationally, joining a team of attorneys in Austin that includes Real Estate Shareholders David Hewlett and Greta Goldsby.
