Bixby

LONG BEACH, CA-Five people were killed Wednesday and one injured in a place crash at Long Beach Airport. Four of the victims were identified as prominent commercial real estate leaders in the area including Tom Dean, Jeff Berger, Mark Bixby and Cohen Financial's Bruce Krall. The lone survivor, Mike Jensen, was taken to Long Beach Memorial Hospital in critical condition, according to numerous media outlets.

Krall was a managing director with Cohen Financial and was based in Irvine. He began his career in real estate finance in 1985 and joined Cohen Financial in 2001, according to the company's web site. Before joining Cohen Financial, Krall was one of the original founders of Fremont Investment & Loan commercial lending division. Before Fremont, he worked for Secured Capital, advising on loan portfolio acquisitions, and before that was an associate at Marcus & Millichap selling commercial properties, according to the web site.

Jensen

Jensen, Pacific Retail Partners president, owns and operates the Long Beach office of the company, according to the Pacific Retail web site. He joined Pacific Retail Partners in 1997 after working at CB Richard Ellis from 1984 to 1997 as a retail property specialist. He continuously ranked in the top 10 in office performance since 1987, according to the web site, and in 1994 was one of the top five retail specialists in the nation. His last year at CB Richard Ellis, he was number one in the Anaheim office and the number three retail specialist in the nation.

Bixby, member of the founding Bixby family of Long Beach, was a broker at Pacific Retail. He worked on the Tesco’s Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market, Home Depot, REI, Boeing, and CSULB Foundation accounts, according to the company web site.

The site noted that Bixby worked for 14 years at Bixby Land Co., where he participated in more than $500 million worth of real estate acquisition, disposition, and development transactions during his time there. His primary responsibilities included large tenant leasing, development, and construction oversight of retail, industrial, self-storage, and office properties. He processed master plans, subdivided, and rezoned properties, and constructed and rehabilitated buildings in more than 20 cities.

News reports noted that Bixby was an avid bicyclist and was active in community affairs on a number of fronts, having served as past president of Long Beach Rotary and in raising money to build Rotary's Centennial Park at the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Junipero Avenue in Long Beach. He was director of the Long Beach Bike Festival and was involved in a number of other efforts to promote cycling.

The plane was owned by property developer Dean, who owns most of the Los Cerritos Wetlands in southeast Long Beach, authorities said. The aircraft was heading to Salt Lake City, airport officials said.

The pilot also died in the crash, and as of press time, had not been identified. Authorities said that the plane had taken off, but was circling back for an unknown reason when it suddenly crashed.
