WOOD-RIDGE, NJ-AvalonBay Communities has broken ground on Avalon at Wesmont Station, the cornerstone of a transit-oriented neighborhood planned by Somerset Development here. The project will consist of four five- and four-story buildings with a total of 406 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. The buildings’ ground floors will house approximately 27,000 square feet of retail space. Occupancy for Avalon at Wesmont Station will begin in the second quarter of 2012. The community will be the company’s 14th luxury apartment development in the state.

“We are excited to see Avalon at Wesmont Station get off of the ground today,” said Ralph Zucker, president of Lakewood, NJ-based Somerset Development, master developer of Wesmont Station, at the ground breaking ceremony. “As we continue to develop horizontal infrastructure, it is encouraging to see the beginnings of vertical construction taking place. This groundbreaking marks a great point of progress in what has been a nine-year redevelopment process thus far.”

Wesmont Station will be located on a former industrial site near Routes 17, 46, 80 and 3 that will become a transit-oriented community. Somerset Development will build the new Wesmont train station to be opened in 2012. Redeveloping the former industrial site had been particularly problematic, noted State Senator and Wood-Ridge Mayor Paul Sarlo.

“Large scale development, especially of a former industrial area, in this economy is not an easy endeavor,” Sarlo said. “To get to this point, we had to work together constructively, involve the community at every level, and stay focused on the ultimate goal.”

Community amenities will include a fully equipped clubhouse, fitness center, barbeque grill area, outdoor pool, five-story parking garage, eight acres of playing fields and six acres of open space. “Future Wesmont Station residents will enjoy a truly enviable location, with all of the amenities of downtown life, in a quiet and suburban Bergen County setting, with a variety of convenient commuting options to Manhattan,” said Ron Ladell, VP of development for Arlington, VA-based AvalonBay.
