HAMILTON, NJ-Hartz Solar Hamilton, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hartz Mountain Industries, Inc., is developing an 8.5-megawatt ground-based solar array here, its first ground-based array.
Previous Hartz solar developments have been rooftop-based. With more than 30,000 panels, the array also is one of the largest systems in the state, the company says.
“Hartz understands the economic and environmental benefits that stem from the investment in solar energy,” says Emanuel Stern, president and COO of Hartz Mountain Industries, in a statement. “Currently, our portfolio supports 6.2 megawatts of solar energy, all in the form of rooftop installations. This foray into ground systems, which offer more acreage than rooftops, will significantly increase our solar energy generating capacity.”
The ground array is located on a 65-acre tract in the township near the intersection of the New Jersey Turnpike and I-195. The solar array will occupy 34 of the 65 acres.
Other solar developments from the company include 125 Castle Road, 200 Seaview Drive and 50 Hartz Way, all in Secaucus. The company is a partner in the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star, WasteWise and Greenscapes programs.
“As a developer, Hartz realizes that commercial building development is not always the best option for a given parcel of land,” Stern says. “In many cases like this, solar development is the best use, chiefly due to its potential cash flow.”
