KAHULUI, HI-R.D. Olson Development has broken ground on the Courtyard by Marriott Maui. The hotel is located at the intersection of Haleakala Highway and Keolani Place on a 3.35-acre parcel of land neighboring the Kahului airport and Maui’s business, commercial and governmental hub. The Courtyard by Marriott Maui is the first Kahului airport hotel.

“The development is being welcomed wholeheartedly by the community,” explains R.D. Olson Development CEO and president, Robert Olson. “In addition to the community groups and business travelers, the hotel’s location and amenities will attract travelers transiting the airport and those wanting easy access to activities and sights on the island’s popular North Shore.”

Getting the project—which is reported to cost just around $28 million—launched is owed to a successful joint venture between A&B Properties, which served as the community development team, and the hotel’s owner, Irvine, CA-based R.D. Olson Development. A&B Properties’ planners identified the site years ago as an ideal hotel location to appeal to business and leisure travelers alike with Kahului being Maui’s commercial hub and nearby Wailuku the seat of county government, according to a prepared statement. R.D. Olson Development will bring it to fruition.

R.D. Olson Construction, a subsidiary of R.D. Olson Development that is credited for other island hotel construction including its recent $40 million renovation of the Edition in Waikiki, is the general contractor. The company will also employ local subcontractors, providing jobs for approximately 200 workers during its 12-months of construction.

Marriott International will manage the four-story 138-room airport hotel. It will house 49 studio king rooms, 79 studio double queen rooms, six suites and four extended stay suites. The hotel will utilize Courtyard by Marriott’s new Gen 4.5 design, which features a reinvented lobby centered on the concept of fusing high-tech, high-style and greater functionality.

Johnson Braund Design Group of Seattle, will provide architectural and interior design services. R.D. Olson Development has developed many Marriott-managed hotels on the US mainland as well. Its most recent development, the Courtyard by Marriott in Oceanside, CA, was completed in 2007 and sold in 2008. Last month, the development company broke ground on yet another Marriott brand, the Residence Inn by Marriott in Residence Inn by Marriott, CA. Its completion date is set for the first quarter of 2012.
