PHOENIX-Cole Real Estate Investments has beefed up its executive team with the addition of Charles Vogel. The 27-year industry veteran joins the firm as a senior vice president of real estate joint ventures.

Vogel is just one of several key hires that the non-traded REIT sponsor has made in the past 30 days. In May, Cole hired Donald MacKinnon to head its high yield portfolio management and brought on Indraneel Karlekar, Ph.D., as executive vice president and chief investment strategist.

Vogel, who recently spent 21 years with the Opus Companies, serving as senior vice president, real estate finance and sales, will work closely with Thomas Roberts, executive vice president and head of real estate investments at Cole.

Roberts says Cole is increasing its focus on joint ventures, and Vogel will focus on strategic partnerships and programmatic joint ventures with developers for acquisitions, recapitalizations and note purchases. He will also provide development capital for build-to-suits and other core commercial real estate ventures.

While with Opus, Vogel managed the company’s joint venture initiatives, banking relationships representing $1.5 billion of debt commitment and financing activity, averaging $1 billion of debt per year. Additionally, he provided leadership to the property management division, overseeing 15 million square feet of commercial space. Vogel also served as principal of Phoenix Capital Partners, providing advisory services to clients for property acquisitions, financing, asset management and project strategy.

Meanwhile, MacKinnon is ramping up in his role where he oversees Cole’s existing portfolio of high yield commercial mortgage debt investments, new origination, and high yield debt portfolio strategy, including investment in mezzanine loans, preferred equity, subordinated notes and CMBS. He reports to Mitchell Sabshon, executive vice president and chief operating officer, and will be located in the firm’s New York City office, working closely with Sabshon on a broad range of initiatives related to Cole’s high yield debt portfolio.

Dr. Karlekar reports to Marc Nemer in his new role. He is responsible for portfolio investment strategies, portfolio management and analytics and economic research for Cole.
