ELIZABETH, NJ-Local, state and Glimcher Realty Trust officials gathered at Glimcher’s Jersey Gardens mall here today to officially launch the installation of the largest rooftop solar array in North America, and the sixth largest in the world-at least for now.
The 4.8-megawatt array, to be built in two phases through the fall, will eventually provide 11% of the 1.3 million-square-foot mall’s energy needs. The installation is the first at a Glimcher property, said Glimcher president Marshall Loeb at the launch ceremony. Glimcher Realty Trust owns 23 malls around the United States. “We’re thrilled to have our first solar project in New Jersey, and hope to follow up with 22 more for all our 23 properties,” Loeb said. “We think Jersey Gardens was perfect for this, as it was built on a brownfield.”
Elizabeth was named one of the 50 greenest cities in America by Popular Science magazine, Loeb added. “It’s going to be the model for all of New Jersey,” said Assemblywoman Annette Quijano at the ceremony. “Everyone is complaining about how much gas costs, how much energy costs. But the sun is here every day.”
“We are not here just to cut a ribbon, but to celebrate the impact of solar energy on the cost of doing business in our community,” added Elizabeth Mayor J. Christian Bollwage.
The project is a partnership with Portland-based Gerding Edlen Development, a developer of green projects. The first phase will install 6,288 modules, providing 1.5kwh or the equivalent of powering 137 US homes when it becomes operational in late summer. Phase 2 will add 8,808 modules, producing an 1.5 million kwh (the equivalent of 139 homes) in late fall.
Glimcher has entered into a power purchase agreement with Clean Focus Corp., Sunnyvale, CA, which will own and finance the system, including solar renewable energy credits. The system was financed in part by Public Service Electric & Gas’ Solar Loan Program, which allows qualified customers to finance from 40% to 60% of the total cost of the system.
The system is the solar industry’s first non-penetrating rooftop product, combining the panel frame and mounting system into a single unit. But for all the celebration of the size of the array, Glimcher likely won’t hold the record for long, said John Conley, project development director of SunPower Corp., San Jose, CA, which will install and maintain the array. The cost of solar installations has decreased every year, encouraging more and larger arrays. “We’ll be the largest in North America for a little while,” he said, “as projects get bigger and bigger.”
