We knew that drugstores were carrying way more products than ever now, but the new flagship Duane Reade on Wall Street in Manhattan is over the top. The 22,000-square-foot location even has a sushi bar.
The local chain, which got snapped up by Walgreen Co. last year for $1.1 billion, is doing the same at other locations. A store in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn sells to-go 64-ounce "growlers" of beer.
Other amenities in the Wall Street location include: a hair salon, an on-site doctor and a stock ticker in the store.
Now, we don't really believe that something like this will become a trend in drugstores across the country, this is in a Trump building after all, but it does show a mini picture of how drugstores are changing in this environment...at least the bigger chains.
Would you trust the CVS and Walgreens of the world to do this well in other upscale urban settings? And would you eat the sushi?
