LONDON-AEW Europe has hired Russell Jewell to run its private equity real estate funds, a group that already has $24 billion of assets under management throughout the continent. He has been appointed as managing director – had of private equity funds.
Jewell most recently was with Greenwich, CT-based Strategic Value Partners as managing director for the firm’s Europe division. The company did not return a request for comment regarding Jewell’s new position.
AEW Europe and AEW Capital Management, which covers the United States and Asia, have a total global real estate platform of more than $42 billion of assets under management. The Europe group invests occasionally with Tristan Capital Partners for the fund European Property Investors Special Opportunities, and has acquired almost $1 billion of assets in Europe for this fund, including a $235 million, three-site retail portfolio in the London Suburbs in March with Addington Capital.
Jewell tells GlobeSt.com that the current macroeconomic conditions make investing challenging, but also present opportunities for the agile investor. He says AEW has been able to take advantage of market dislocation, liquidity constraints and the small but expanding pipeline of assets being forced into the market by the European banks.
“Looking forward, we expect to have to be very selective about markets and the different sectors within those markets – some will remain depressed by market fundamentals but others are showing considerable potential for growth, such as Paris offices, despite the general economic malaise. Our goal is to create investment product which will provide our clients with exceptional risk weighted returns over the next five years,” he says.
