NORTHBROOK, IL-Frontline Real Estate Partners LLC, based here, will provide real estate advisory and disposition services to handle lease restructurings and sales of about 130 restaurants owned by Kazi Foods. The Studio City, CA-based firm, the second largest Kentucky Fried Chicken franchisee, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for four of its 11 franchise entities earlier this year after legal action by creditors.
The company, which also maintains a headquarters in the US Virgin Islands, owns more than 230 KFC and 20 Burger King restaurants on the West Coast and East Coast, as well as the Northeast. Owner Zubair Kazi filed for bankruptcy on four of his 11 franchise firms in February when GE Capital and Colonial Pacific Leasing demanded debt of as much as $70 million. The bankruptcy covers the 130 restaurants in Michigan, Florida, New York, New Jersey and Maryland.
Joshua Joseph, principal at Frontline, says the company has experience with handling other restaurant bankruptcy properties, such as Lone Star Steakhouse, Cooker Restaurants and Uno Chicago Grill Pizzeria. He tells GlobeSt.com there’s already a lot of interest in the Kazi properties. “We just took them to market, and we’ve started to receive offers, there’s several already on the table,” he says.
The receivership and troubled property advising business is still going strong, especially in the retail world, Joseph says. “There’s a lot of distress work out there. This will likely go on at least the next couple of years,” he says.
