NEWARK-The steel has been topped out on the Newark Collegiate Academy, a 63,855-square-foot high school at 18-36 Norfolk Street here, with construction to be completed this spring, announced Hollister Construction Services. The stand-alone academy will feature a four-story classroom building with a two-story gymnasium/cafeteria/auditorium for approximately 600 students.

The Friends of TEAM Academy Charter Schools will operate the school. Construction began in February, and the building will be delivered for occupancy in March 2012. Thus far, progress the ground-up building has been straightforward on the 1.3-acre site, Chris Johnson, Hollister CEO, tells GlobeSt.com.

“This is a small site in the middle of downtown Newark,” he says. Hollister Construction Services has worked with the owner and KSS Architects LLP during the preconstruction phase. Though the project will not pursue LEED certification, he says, “Newark wanted to see some green elements,” such as using recycled materials for flooring and ceiling tiles, and using energy-efficient equipment.

TEAM Charter Schools is a growing network of KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) schools, which currently serves more than 1,300 African American and Latino students from low-income Newark communities. The mission of TEAM Charter Schools is to create a network of schools that instill in their students the desire and ability to succeed in college, in order to change the world. The national network of KIPP schools serves over 27,800 students.

Hard costs for the building are $13.5 million, Johnson says, but the benefits extend beyond mere profits. “The kids are dedicated, and once we met them, we wanted to get involved,” Johnson says. “They want to go to school, and the school is producing future leaders.”
