It looks like landlords keep losing out when it comes to the demise of Borders.
The latest problem is a failure between Borders and Books-A-Million to reach a deal for the latter to buy 30 stores that are closing as part of Borders' 399-store liquidation. They apparently could not reach an agreement on terms of the deal or the liquidation sale taking place in the closing stores.
Whoever's fault it was in not getting the deal done, it seems like a shred of hope for some landlords just got shot down. The Books-A-Million stores would slide into those Borders locations and likely not cause any conflicts with existing tenants.
This especially stinks for the Cafaro Co., which expected to have eight vacancies filled by new Books-A-Millions, according to news reports. Of course, just because this particular deal fell through, it doesn't mean that some of the closing Borders won't eventually be home to a Books-A-Million. But it would have been nice if those 30 stores could have easily been snapped up.
As far as those liquidation sales go, it sounds like you would have been better off buying those products when Borders was running normally.
