ARCADIA, CA-A joint venture of Kiewit and Pasadena, CA-based Parsons Corp., called Foothill Transit Constructors, has won a $486 million contract to build the 11.5-mile Gold Line Foothill Extension light rail project from Pasadena to Azusa. The project includes final design and construction of 11.5 miles of track, six stations, dozens of crossings, utilities, systems and related infrastructure.
The contract was awarded by the Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension Construction Authority board of directors. Board chairman and Glendora Mayor Doug Tessitor said that the Kiewit-Parsons JV "presented the best of both worlds: the top-ranked technical proposal and the lowest bid."
The project will take approximately four years to complete and is estimated to create nearly 7,000 jobs and $1 billion of economic output during construction , according to Christine Cooper, director of the economy and policy analysis group at the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp.
A Gold Line Authority announcement regarding the contract noted that Kiewit and Parsons have teamed nearly 20 times in the last decade to complete design-build projects and have designed and built more than 60 major infrastructure projects in the last 40 years. Kiewit was the lead team member on Phase 1 of the Gold Line from Los Angeles to Pasadena, with Parsons as the lead design subcontractor. That contract was completed in 2003 on time and under budget.
Kiewit also recently oversaw demolition of the Mulholland Bridge, a job that is part of the Interstate 405 (San Diego Freeway) Sepulveda Pass Improvement Project. The press dubbed the bridge demoliton "Carmageddon" for its potential impacts on the 405, which is one of the heavily traveled freeways in the region. Kiewit completed the demolition 17 hours ahead of schedule.
