SOMERSET, NJ-The 420,000-square-foot former AT&T facility at 290 Davidson Ave., empty for 10 years, soon will reopen as a sustainable, state-of-the-art cloud computing center, relocating from Piscataway, announced SHI International. Occupancy will begin in August.

The renovated building also will serve as the IT solution provider’s world headquarters, serving nearly 1,000 employees. It is the largest interior commercial renovation in the state, and according to SHI, it will generate 500 construction jobs.

"We could have located our new industrial-grade cloud computing center anywhere, but we chose New Jersey because of our own history and the quality of the local talent we have enjoyed since our founding in 1989," says Thai Lee, president and CEO of SHI International, in a statement.

The $3 billion, SHI is one of the few woman-owned companies in the technology sector, and one of the 100 largest privately owned companies in America. It also is the largest woman- and minority-owned business in the country.

"SHI outgrew its current headquarters location in Piscataway and needed a much larger facility to accommodate our growth," Steve Alt, director of operations at SHI International tells GlobeSt.com in an e-mail interview. "With the assistance of Jones Lang LaSalle we were able to take advantage of the soft market conditions and acquire 290 Davidson at well below replacement cost. The building provides SHI with plenty of office space, data center space and parking for SHI's continued growth."

Construction on the building, which is three times the size of SHI’s location in Piscataway, took 15 months. The main building consists of two five-story towers connected at ground level, as well as a third building. The project was designed by Cornerstone Architectural Group, and engineered by Becht Engineering, with interior spaces following LEED guidelines. Solar panels on the roof can provide 500 kilowatts annually. Construction was led by Turner Construction and Unity Construction. SHI is working toward a LEED Silver certification by utilizing water reduction systems, lighting upgrades, low VOC finishes, lighting control systems and energy star equipment in the building, according to Alt.
