WYCKOFF, NJ-The next stage of the proposed redevelopment of a distressed former supermarket in to a 62,042-square-foot ShopRite has been completed, as Inserra Supermarkets concluded its testimony to the township Planning Board, as well as its Design Review Committee and Shade Tree Commission.
Inserra has been presenting redevelopment plans for more than a year after becoming the long-term ground lessee of the 7.6-acre site in 2009. Included in the most recent presentation was expert testimony from a certified, licensed architect, environmental remediation professional, civil engineer, traffic engineer and professional planner. In May, revised site plans introduced amended layouts and additional parking.
“Inserra is proposing a modern-day supermarket, not a ‘big-box’ store as some have called it. It has been planned and designed to fit into the surrounding community and accords with the zoning setbacks and buffers required from nearby residential neighborhoods,” says attorney James Jaworski, Inserra’s representative in its planning board application, in a statement.
Formerly the location of a 53,000-square-foot A&P, a sublet from Stop & Shop, and adjoining Walgreens at the corner of Wyckoff and Greenwood Avenues, the site has been vacant for 10 years. A vacant 11,700-square-foot neighborhood center also is on the property. The site, says Inserra is in a state of “total disrepair.”
Plans call for the placement of more than 1,130 shade trees and permanent shrubs throughout the site. ShopRite will be the second supermarket in the township.
“The general public has been extremely supportive of this redevelopment, and Inserra Supermarkets is grateful,” added Jaworski. “We look forward to addressing future inquiries and collaborating with Township officials and their experts to bring this project to fruition.”
