NEW YORK CITY-Martin Berger, the chairman and general partner of Westchester County-based Robert Martin Company LLC, passed away suddenly on September 12, 2011. He was 81.

Considered a visionary, leader and friend by many, Berger co-founded Robert Martin Company LLC with Robert S. Weinberg in 1957. The company developed and managed over six million square feet of office and industrial properties, including Blue Hill Plaza, South Westchester Executive Park and many others, which merged into Mack-Cali Realty Corp. in 1997.

Among his many achievements, Berger was the chairman of the board, owner and CEO of the City and Suburban Federal Savings Bank, as well as the president of the Construction Industry Foundation, president of the Builders Institute of Westchester and Putnam Counties and a former commissioner of the Westchester County Parkway Commission.

Berger also served as a long-term member of the Mack-Cali board, as well as the Municipal Assistance Corporation of New York, and as director of the Governor’s Island Preservation Corporation.

Mitchell E. Hersh, Mack-Cali president and chief executive officer, commented, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend, Marty Berger. His impact on the industry in the New York region will forever be evident. His experience, knowledge, guidance and friendship will be missed greatly.”

Born on June 19, 1930 in the Bronx, Berger graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School. He received a Bachelor of Science from New York University in 1951 and served the country in the Korean War. In 1987, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in commercial science from Pace University. He was also named one of Westchester’s most influential citizens by The Journal News in 1999 for his impact on the White Plains skyline.
