EATONTOWN, NJ-Three years after closing due to a Chapter 11 filing, Boscov’s is returning to a newly renovated Monmouth Mall here on Sunday, October 9. The department store is renovating the 265,000-square-foot anchor building to offer a full merchandise assortment. It will join JCPenney, Lord & Taylor, Macy’s and AMC Theatres in anchoring the 1.5 million-square-foot mall, owned by Eatontown Monmouth Mall, LLC, a joint venture of affiliates of Vornado Realty Trust and Kushner Companies.
“We are delighted to welcome Boscov’s back to the Monmouth Mall at a time when our modernization program is nearing a successful conclusion and when traffic and sales are on the upswing,” says Jared Kushner, a principal of Kushner Companies, in a statement.
The owners invested more than $30 million to renovate the 51-year old shopping center, and to acquire the building to accommodate Boscov’s.
Boscov’s and the mall will host a series of events on October 9 and 10 to celebrate the Boscov’s opening and the completion of the mall’s dramatic renovation. The events will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a performance by Academy Award-winning actress Shirley Jones, a display of Hollywood memorabilia owned by television host Gene London, and promotions and special offers from Boscov’s and other mall merchants.
Reading, PA-based Boscov’s originally opened at the mall in 2001, replacing Stern’s, but was one of 10 stores closed in 2008 when the chain filed for Chapter 11 protection. Albert Boscov, son of founder Solomon Boscov, was part of a team that regained control of the company in 2009, and the chain emerged from bankruptcy later that year. Boscov’s former building at the mall was 180,000 square feet, and at one point the location was being considered for a Wal-Mart, according to local news reports in 2009.
Monmouth Mall opened in March 1960 as an open-air center, and was enclosed in 1975. The mall was acquired by the Vornado/Kushner joint venture in 2002. The mall went through a major expansion in 2009, and began an interior renovation last year that was completed in summer 2011.
