PARAMUS, NJ- A new, larger and energy-efficient student center will open on October 18 at Bergen Community College here, serving both those enrolled and as the main entrance to the College’s primary facility, the Pitkin Education Center.
The $5.5 million project, which entailed renovating the existing 16,738-square-foot building and adding 7,556 square feet for student clubs, activities, performances and recreation, was necessitated by the college’s growth, college officials say.
“Our enrollment has gone up so much in recent years, we needed more space,” a spokesman for the college tells GlobeSt.com. More than 17,000 students are enrolled at the college, and it serves more than 32,000 students through adult and continuing education programs.
The new center, designed by Hasbrouck Heights, NJ-based DMR Architects, broke ground in 2010. Arco Construction Group, Elizabeth, also worked on the project. Construction included expanding the vestibule, adding multiple automatic doors and widening wheelchair accessible ramps, the creation of 22 new offices for student clubs and organization, multiple seating areas, and WiFi throughout the building.
