AKRON-University Park Alliance, a non-profit group dedicated to the redevelopment of 50 blocks surrounding the University of Akron, has signed a master services agreement with KUD International LLC. The developer is a subsidiary of Tokyo-based Kajima Corp.

According to a statement from the alliance, KUD will be responsible for developing a portion of the projects envisioned by the group. The area involved is split into four separate districts: Main Street to the north, Crossroads to the east, University Square to the south and South of Exchange to the west.

Projects discussed reportedly include office, retail, housing and medical private uses, as well as residence halls, research buildings and an arena for the university. Individual projects are expected to move forward in the coming months now that the relationship with KUD is in place, according to the alliance statement. “Akron has a well developed plan and vision,” said KUD president and CEO Marvin Suomi in the statement.

His firm has completed a few national and international projects, including aquariums in Tampa and Long Beach, and baseball and football stadiums in San Francisco and Philadelphia. The company also worked on the CNBC Headquarters complex in Englewood Cliffs, NJ.

The alliance is primarily funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Other donors include the university, the city and local health systems.
