MINNEAPOLIS-One of the founders of locally based Ryan Cos., Francis Ryan, has died at 98. He and father James Ryan created the development, design-build and real estate management firm from a former lumber company in 1938.
Until his death Oct. 23 of pneumonia, Francis was still listed as board chairman for the company. He’s known as being the heart of the firm, believing in taking care of both customers and employees. According to a company statement, his mottos were: Act with integrity, keep your promises and don’t forget about family.
Tim Gray, vice chairman of the firm, said in a statement that Francis was in attendance at the firm’s most recent meeting in September. “I’ve never met a person who loved his company more than Fran,”
The company has grown into a firm employing 600 people, with offices here and in Cedar Rapids, IA; Chicago; Des Moines, IA; Phoenix; the Quad Cities; San Diego and Tampa. Pat Ryan, a grandson of founder James Ryan, is president and CEO.
The company has handled many public projects, including the construction of the new US Courthouse in Cedar Rapids, as well as commercial projects such as the 240,000-square-foot Two MarketPointe office building in Bloomington, MN, the W Hotel in Minneapolis and the 119,000-square-foot Rosemont Corporate Center in Rosemont, IL.
