CINCINNATI-Christ Hospital has announced plans to move a portion of its campus to the 152,000-square-foot former Ohio National Life Insurance headquarters building in the Mt. Auburn neighborhood. The hospital will lease the building on 5 acres at 237 William Howard Taft, which was recently purchased for about $6.1 million by local developer Al. Neyer Inc.
Susan Croushore, hospital president and CEO, said in a statement that the health system will use the space for non-clinical offices and support functions. The employees will move in between spring and summer, she said. “We realize that many of our non-clinical and support functions could be provided more efficiently at a location separate from the hospital,” she said. “The Taft building is an ideal location for this, as it allows these non-clinical departments to remain right here in the Mt. Auburn community, which has been our home since 1893.”
The Taft property was developed in 1959 as the headquarters for the insurance firm, which moved out in 1996. Hamilton County later purchased the facility and used it for offices of the county’s Department of Job and Family Services, which moved out in 2011. The county had valued the property at more than $10 million in 2009.
The Al. Neyer firm will start the renovation in February. A spokeswoman for the firm tells GlobeSt.com that much of the money will be spent to demolish a structure on the property to make room for parking. She says she cannot reveal the lease term for the property, but says the renovations will include LEED certification. PNC Bank provided financing for the project.
