CINCINNATI-Macy’s Inc. said recently that it plans to open 11 new Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s stores and close nine existing stores of the two brands, and will replace one of each. The company will close five Macy’s stores and open five new locations, and will close four Bloomingdale’s and open six new locations, including five of the smaller Bloomingdale Outlets.

The Macy’s stores to be closed include the locations at West Ridge Mall in Topeka, KS; Laurel Mall in Laurel, MD; Parmatown Mall in Parma, OH; Hickory Hollow in Antioch, TN and Mall of the Mainland in Texas City, TX. Bloomingdale’s stores will close at Perimeter Mall in Atlanta; Oakbrook Home and Furniture in Oak Brook, IL; White Flint in North Bethesda, MD and Mall of America in Bloomington, MN. These stores will close in early spring, with clearance sales beginning on Jan. 8.

New Macy’s stores will open in Victorville, CA (mid-2013); Gurnee, IL (spring 2013); the Bronx, NY (by spring 2014); Salt Lake City (March 2012 and Greendale, WI (March 2012). Except for Victorville (103,000 square feet), the stores average about 150,000 square feet.

A new 120,000-square-foot Bloomingdale’s store will open in Glendale Galleria in Glendale, CA in fall 2013.

The company also plans to open five 25,000-square-foot Bloomingdale Outlet stores in 2012 in Paragon Outlets Livermore Valley in Livermore, CA; Merrimack Premium Outlets in Merrimack, NH; the Gallery at Westbury Plaza in Westbury, NY; the Shops at Park Lane in Dallas and Paragon Outlets Grand Prairie in Grand Prairie, TX.

The retailer also plans to replace an old Macy’s store in Bay Shore, NY with a new 200,000-square-foot store in fall 2013. A new Bloomingdale’s will also be built in Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto, CA in 2014, replacing an existing store that will be demolished for a new retail development by Simon Property Group at the Stanford University-owned center.

Terry Lundgren, chairman of Macy’s, said in a statement that these moves focus growth on the best and most productive locations. “This requires us to make some difficult decisions to close stores that no longer meet our performance requirements,” he said. The company will have 854 stores in 45 states, Washington, DC, Guam and Puerto Rico when these moves are complete.

David Browning, manager at Parmatown Mall, said in a statement that his tenants are committed to remaining in the troubled center. Parmatown’s lender has filed for receivership due to loan service default by owner RMS Enterprises, reports say. The mall’s other tenants include Dick’s Sporting Goods, JCPenney and Walmart. “The long-expected departure of Macy’s from the Parmatown family of tenants helps facilitate our goal of redeveloping and reconfiguring this dynamic mall,” Browning said.
