SECAUCUS, NJ-Construction will begin in the spring on a Residence Inn by Marriott, the eighth hotel at Harmon Meadow in Secaucus, NJ, says developer Hartz Mountain Industries. The 154-suite hotel, situated on one acre at the Plaza at Harmon Meadow, is being built on the former site of a Loews’ six-screen theater, with a targeted opening date of summer 2013.
Overbuilding, given Harmon Meadow’s existing 1,200-plus hotel rooms, is not a concern—Hartz Mountain already is hoping to announce another hotel in the next 12 months, says Gus Milano, executive vice president of finance and leasing.
“This is a New York City-driven market,” Milano tells GlobeSt.com. “You have direct regular transportation to Times Square. It seems to work very well; we [also] have significant office space.”
An eight-screen cinema elsewhere on the property was replaced by an LA Fitness Signature Club. Instead, a single 14-screen Kerasotes Theater has opened across the street from the new hotel site.
The hotel will feature suites with fully equipped kitchens, private meeting spaces, a fitness center, whirlpool and spa, and a business center, among other amenities.
Meanwhile, The Children’s Place has taken an additional 28,000 square feet at 500 Plaza Drive to expand its corporate headquarters. The children’s retail clothing and accessories company, which has been leasing space from Hartz Mountain Industries since 1999, then will have a total of 169,000 square feet at the site.
“That company is growing so rapidly,” Milano says. Construction on the additional space is in process. Tom Consiglio at Resource Realty represented the tenant in the negotiations.
