As a casual viewer of the sci-fi/fantasy show “Fringe,” I can’t say I expected its scenes (which more typically include doppelgangers, alternative universes and shapeshifters) to intersect with my own commercial real estate reality. But believe it or not, such was the case in the last few days.

On the show, an FBI agent recently unplugged her electric car, which was parked on a major city street, with no indication that it was anything unusual. Was it a product placement for a corporate sponsor? Absolutely. But is it also a harbinger of our own future? Maybe.

The International Parking Institute recently published a Framework on Sustainability for Parking Design, Management and Operations (PDF), establishing industry goals to make parking more environment-friendly. According to the IPI’s website, “The International Parking Institute (IPI) recognizes that parking owners, professionals, operators, and users have a significant opportunity to contribute to vibrant and productive communities and commerce, reduction of environmental impacts, and promotion of healthy lifestyles. “

The Institute says it will promote and support educational opportunities and technologies, including seminars, awards, and features. And a number of areas, in Southern California and elsewhere, provide charging stations for electric and hybrid vehicles. So the beginnings are there.

We in New Jersey and around the United States shouldn’t have to live in an alternate timeline (don’t ask) in order to make the simple act of parking a car sustainable. So read the IPI’s Framework and provide some input.
