It’s time for casino wars in Atlantic City. With the soft opening of Revel less than a month away comes the news that the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa is in the midst of a $50 million renovation, according to the Associated Press.

The makeover affects 1,566 and the corridors leading to them, adding 46-inch LED televisions, walk-in showers and wireless Internet. Late last year, Borgata began a $1 million renovation of its poker room, including adding a high-limit lounge.

A smart investment most people would say in a competitive market, except the Borgata isn’t even nine years old: it opened in July 2003, and at the time was the first new hotel property in Atlantic City in 13 years.

Soon, however, the $2.4 billion Revel, with 1,800 rooms, 14 restaurants (when fully open), a theater, and shops an nightclubs, will be the new kid on the block. And all of Atlantic City is facing increasing competition from casinos and racinos in Pennsylvania, New York, and even Northern New Jersey (Look for a feature on the subject soon in our sister publication, Real Estate Forum).

So bravo to Borgata’s owner, Marina District Development for making the investment, another sign that developers still think Atlantic City can turn itself around. And it will be fun to see the two largest resorts in the city duking it out in terms of service and amenities.

And, hey, it’s more construction work!
