CHICAGO-Northwestern Memorial HealthCare said Monday that it will open up six new medical office buildings, one in the city and five in the North suburbs. The healthcare group said the move will include adding 120 more doctors to be able to serve patients better in the region.
The new office locations will be in the city’s Lakeview neighborhood, as well as Highland Park, Evanston, Glenview, Grayslake and Deerfield. The doctors will come from Northwestern Memorial Physician Group and Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation, and will have faculty appointments at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
The new medical offices will help serve the estimated 1.5 million residents who live in Chicago’s northern Cook and Lake counties, according a hospital statement. “Many of our patients come from northern communities, and up to now, they have had to travel longer distances for routine are,” said Dean Harrison, president and CEO of the healthcare company. “Our expansion brings the Northwestern care they seek closer to where they live or work, making access much more convenient.” A hospital official reportedly said that the goal is to locate a doctor within 20 miles of a suburban patient.
More hospitals are looking to branch out to medical offices their outpatient services, to free up space and dollars at the main sites, according to MOB experts. In Lakeview, for example, the Northwestern group will consolidate two existing offices into a multi-service location that will include internal medicine, dermatology and integrative medicine, as well as a full radiology suite. At the Glenview site, to go into the Glen master-planned project, Northwestern will bring specialists in cardiology, dermatology, ENT, oncology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, neurology, urology and imaging.
The hospital already has big plans for city campuses. The company wants to build a $334 million, one-million-square-foot medical campus in the Streeterville neighborhood, at Erie Street and Fairbanks Court. The firm is working through city and state approvals.
